To celebrate World Environment Day, a European research and consulting firm conducted a survey on recycling performance across 48 countries, including nations with the highest recycling rates as well as many of the world's largest economies. The study also covered low-income countries in Latin America, Asia, and Africa to highlight global disparities.
Austria was ranked as the best-performing country for recycling. Wales ranked first within the UK, placing second overall. Northern Ireland came second in the UK, England ranked ninth, and Scotland ranked eleventh.
None of the world's top recyclers achieve municipal waste recycling rates above 60%, once differences in reporting practices are taken into account.
Eight of the top ten recyclers are in Europe, with seven located in Western Europe-reflecting long-term strategies and policies that have driven investment in collection, logistics, sorting, and reprocessing across the continent.
The exceptions are two East Asian economies, Taiwan and South Korea, which also have well-established collection and treatment systems. These results highlight the importance of long-term investment in making recycling convenient and efficient, as well as the role of behavioural norms developed over many years in creating a recycling culture.
The countries reported to have seen the largest declines in recycling rates are Singapore, South Korea, Spain, and Germany. Revisions made by some countries have improved their performance or addressed the fact that they had not previously reported recycling rates-with China and South Africa seeing the greatest upward adjustments.
