What is the EU EN 1501 standard?

Mar 30, 2026

The EU EN 1501 standard is a series of European safety standards specifically designed for Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs) and their lifting devices. It aims to establish basic safety and health requirements for these vehicles in the design, manufacturing, and operation processes, ensuring their compliance with the requirements of the EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), and is a CE certification technical standard that garbage collection vehicles must pass to enter the European market.

The following is the core content of the standard:

  • Design and Manufacturing Safety: Safety regulations have been established for the structural design, hydraulic system, electrical system, control system, and other aspects of garbage collection vehicles to prevent work-related accidents caused by design defects.
  • Risk assessment: It is required to identify and prevent potential risks that may exist during the normal operation, maintenance, and transportation of garbage collection vehicles.
  • Requirements for lifting equipment: The safety of the lifting mechanism for lifting, dumping, and returning garbage bins is emphasized.
  • Hazard elimination: Install protective devices in hazardous areas for cutting, squeezing, and rolling operations.

And these are standard subdivision (partial):

  • EN 1501-1: Side mounted garbage collection vehicles.
  • EN 1501-2: Rear mounted garbage collection vehicles.
  • EN 1501-3: Front loading garbage collection vehicles.
  • EN 1501-5: Special requirements for lift devices for garbage collection vehicles.

Garbage collection vehicles sold and put into use in the European Union must comply with the EN 1501 standard to obtain the CE mark. However, some Latin American and South American countries also require these qualifications for municipal procurement.

In summary, EN 1501 is the most critical standard for mechanical safety in the waste management industry, ensuring that the operation of garbage trucks does not pose unacceptable risks to workers while collecting garbage.
