- ASTM A653 (Continuous Process): The steel mill directly pulls a coil of steel strip through the zinc bath, and at the exit, an "air knife" is used to blow off excess zinc liquid, resulting in a very flat and smooth surface, with extremely precise control over the coating thickness.
- ISO 1461 (rack-type): Your parts have been welded and holes drilled, and then placed in a zinc bath for a "bath". Due to natural dripping cooling, the surface may have zinc nodules or uneven thickness, but it can protect all cuts and welds.
B. Anti-corrosion capability
- The coating of ISO 1461 is typically much thicker than that of A653. This is because it is often used in harsh outdoor environments, relying on its thickness to achieve decades of maintenance-free lifespan.
- ASTM A653 is more commonly used in protected environments or in scenarios where further coating (color coating) is required.
C. Edge trimming protection
- If you cut a plate made of ASTM A653, there is no zinc coating at the cut (although zinc has a cathodic protection effect, the cut surface is still prone to rusting).
- For parts made according to ISO 1461, due to the overall immersion process, all edges and the interior of holes will be covered by the zinc layer.
