In recent years, Kazakhstan has made significant strides in waste management, focusing on waste collection, recycling, and the strategic use of waste containers to promote environmental sustainability.
Increase in Waste Collection and Recycling
In 2023, Kazakhstan's urban waste collection reached approximately 4.1 million tons, marking an 8% increase from the previous year. Notably, 1.3 million tons of this waste underwent sorting and recycling, reflecting a 6.8% year-on-year growth.
The composition of the collected waste includes:
- Street Cleaning Waste: 2.825 million tons
- Cardboard and Paper Waste: 0.1199 million tons
- Market Waste: 0.1072 million tons
- Plastic and Polyethylene: 0.0844 million tons
- Food Waste: 0.0603 million tons
- Glass Waste: 0.0317 million tons
- Metal Waste: 0.005 million tons
- Clothing and Textile Waste: 0.0012 million tons
- Electronic and Electrical Equipment Waste: 0.000296 million tons
The remaining 2.6 million tons consist of mixed waste.
Implementation of Waste Containers for Efficient Sorting
To enhance waste sorting and recycling efforts, Kazakhstan has introduced designated waste containers across urban areas. These containers are strategically placed to facilitate the segregation of different waste types, encouraging residents to participate actively in recycling initiatives. As a result, waste collection services now cover approximately 80% of the population in cities and large residential areas.
Development of Waste-to-Energy Projects
Kazakhstan is advancing its waste management infrastructure by planning the construction of waste-to-energy plants in six cities: Aktobe, Almaty, Atyrau, Nur-Sultan, Taraz, and Shymkent. These facilities aim to convert waste into energy, integrating the generated electricity into the national grid. The goal is to increase the waste utilization rate to 30% by 2025, aligning with the average levels observed in European countries.
Community Engagement and Environmental Initiatives
The "Clean Kazakhstan" environmental campaign has seen active participation from approximately 6.5 million citizens. Over the course of the initiative, more than 1.1 million tons of waste have been collected, and around 1.6 million trees have been planted. Additionally, the introduction of the @TazaQazBot Telegram chatbot has enabled the public to report environmental concerns efficiently, leading to the successful resolution of approximately 9,700 out of over 10,000 submissions.
Future Outlook
Kazakhstan's commitment to improving waste management is evident through ongoing projects and the implementation of supportive policies. The government's focus on expanding waste collection services, promoting recycling, and developing waste-to-energy facilities underscores a comprehensive approach to achieving environmental sustainability.
Through these concerted efforts, Kazakhstan is making notable progress in waste management, particularly in the utilization of waste containers and the development of waste-to-energy solutions. These initiatives not only enhance environmental health but also contribute to the nation's sustainable development goals.
