To address the 30% of uncollected waste, the government is modernizing garbage trucks, deploying smart bins, and promoting community-based waste segregation. Landfills like Bantar Gebang, which receives over 7,000 tons daily, are also targeted for relief through waste-to-energy projects.
Private companies, NGOs, and international agencies are partnering with the government to enhance recycling and promote sustainable practices. Waste-to-energy plants, such as the planned facility in Surabaya, are key developments in this strategy.
Challenges include insufficient infrastructure, public awareness gaps, and policy enforcement issues. Experts stress the need for better education and stronger incentives to achieve sustainability goals.
Despite hurdles, Indonesia's commitment to better waste management sets an example for other developing nations tackling similar issues.
